This is an example of how a potentially great painting can go terribly wrong. The foreground details are pretty nicely handled (ei the water effects), but the bg could have used a huge transition in color. I think way more gray blues would have helped a lot, but what can ya do, huh? I'm going to scan this in and work digitally on it. Once I'm finished, I'll post the revision. Cheers.

Okay - here is my head turn animation. It's not nearly as nice as I wanted it - BUT - I AM going to clean things up and re post it this summer. So be patient. I did get 95 % on the assignment thought. I was about 3 different shades of green in the face after handing this in, and my instructor was like "Brad... Go home.....". So I did.... Enjoy!

Glen and Rusty

Here are some new characters I am working on. They are part of a story I am putting together. Glen is a disgruntled black sheep that feels sort of "hard done too", and is an intellect of sorts. He has a best friend named Rusty. Rusty is a happy go lucky Llama that dreams of becoming a movie star. I will be solidifying the designs for them soon, but the basic idea is that the two characters balance each other out, sort of like a yin and yang thing.

Nearly Finished Isle of Skye Painting

So here we are, now two weeks later on this painting I was tell you about. It's almost finished and I'm really happy with it. As you will notice, I decided that it needed a stronger foreground element so I drew in another ground plane and added a figure. I think having the figure in the composition creates a better story visually. There's not too much left to do except strengthen the mountains on the left and solidify the bottom half of the figure. I will post the final when its done. Until then, here's what I've got. Enjoy!

Star Wars Animatic Pannels

So here was a great digital painting excersise. These are shots from The Empire Strikes Back which I painted frame for frame to create an animatic for my digital tools class. It neat to see the effect of painting a pannel out from a still screen shot. They kind of look like concept art.

The Isle of Skye

Alright, so this is a new one I have been working on for a new book I am writing. I'm naming it "The Isle of Skye", after a place in scotland. It's completely digital, and it's the first time I have tried this way of painting (without real paints). It sould be interesting to see how it turns out. I'm excited about it, and I'll be posting some new digital paintings soon along with this one in its final form.

I had fun doing these drawings, even though studies can be a bit dry. If you want to be a good animator, you MUST MUST MUST, have a great understanding of how the human body is put together. It helps with character design, and animating. Hope you like em!

I thought of the name Alabaster and said to myself, "what does alabaster mean", because I knew it meant something. So I asked my mum, and she said, "the rock alabaster?". I smiled and said, "thats the one".

Mysterious Jungle

So finally my mood landscape painting is done. I'm quite happy with it actually. I think I was a bit worried that the final would turn out not as good as the two roughs, but I think I prevailed. I like how a stayed analogous in my colour scheme, almost to the point of being monochrome, but a managed to cool things down in the front to make things pop a bit more. Enjoy!

This is one of my fave peices - One thing I love to do is paint portraits. There's something about studies like these that makes the painting a bit simpler, but also, the nice thing about portraits in particular is their personal quality. Great for capturing the subjects emotion, and even their thoughts.

Here's a nice little scene that I'm almost done. This is just the first and second draft of three that I'm doing for a Mysterious Jungle painting. I'm pretty excited about it and I'm already liking how the final is looking, but that could change by the time it's finished. I originally started with the top one, going for a more acidic color scheme as well as experementing with using black instead of mixing achromatic greys. You can see on the bottom how mixing greys really softened up the colors - I dont know which one I like more though, because they both make two different but great effects.

Okay, I know what you're thinking. "It was drawn from a photograph." Well you're right, ha, ha.

This was a study I did early on in the game when I wasn't so good with drawing and painting from life. People may tell you that drawing and painting from a photo is no good. In fact, I'll tell you the same thing. However, I did learn something from drawing this. I learned that using photos for reference is okay but not to copy them. Copying is gay...So the moral is... Use photos as a tool to learn, not to copy.

Hands and Feet

At first, hands and feet for me were somewhat difficult because I found it hard to really say alot about structure in the drawing. One day, I saw some of the better hand and foot drawings that were posted up in the hallways, and the thing that I noticed that was making the difference was using cross contour here and there to show the plane changes. So I sat down one night and taught myself how to do it. Sure enough I got an 89% on both sets of drawings from my life instructer. This was the first time I really felt like I broke into that small group that everyone gives the "nod of approval" to (for lifedrawing at least)... It was cool.
